About three policemen were on Thursday shot dead by unknown gunmen who stormed a police checkpoint in the Independence Layout area of Enugu, the Enugu state capital.
The gruesome attack reportedly happened at about 12 noon near the Cashew bus stop, a shouting distance from the popular Timber junction.
The policemen were reported to be on stop-and-search when the hoodlums opened fire and instantly killed three of the cops.
A keke rider operating in the area reportedly sustained gunshot wound.
The gunmen were also said to have kidnapped a woman and her driver who ran into the hoodlums.
Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Dan Ndukwe, an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), who confirmed the incident said “information surrounding the incident is still sketchy.”
According to him, “manhunt of the hoodlums has been initiated;” pledging that “further information will be communicated.”
