APC convention: Outcome will make party stronger, more united, says chieftain-By- Reginald Okoro

Dr Paul Okorie, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi says that the outcome of the party’s National Convention holding in Abuja on Saturday 26 will make the party stronger and more united.Okorie, one time commissioner for Works and Transport in Ebonyi stated this in an interview with our correspondent on Friday in Abakaliki.Okorie commended Mr Mai Mala Buni, APC national Caretaker chairman and governor of Yobe state for the level of preparation on ground for the exercise noting that with everything in place, the party was set for free, fair and transparent convention.

“The party is set to conduct a convention that will be acceptable to many because there is no time you can satisfy everybody.”But, in every battle, there must be winners and there must be losers. But, generally from what I have seen and from the reactions of many members of the party, the dissenting voices are little.”This means that at the end of the day, the outcome of the convention will be accepted by the generality of the members and this will make us stronger and more united as a political party,” Okorie said.He said the party had adopted concensus option for the election of the new national officers and urged those that would emerge to see their emergence as act of God.

The party has tilted towards concensus option for the convention and this is done in order to reduce rancour, tension, acrimony and bitterness.”Those people who have been so chosen should remember that they were not chosen because they are the best but that God wants them to chosen at such a time.”They must be ready to offer best of services to the party in order to deepen party internal democracy so as to justify the reason they were being chosen.”What is expected from them is to unite the party and make the members to speak with one voice as a political party,” he added.

The former Commissioner explained that the convention would usher in new set of leaders that would reinvent the party, treat members fairly, and guarantee good governance.”Party members are not being carried along most of the time, so, it’s expected that the leadership that will come on board will do everything to remove bitterness and rancour within the rank and file of the party.”They should ensure good governance and run party affairs with high degree of sincerity and integrity so that it may appeal to many other people to find a reason to come over to the party.”Democracy is all about number and with general election around the corner, they should do everything to make the party more attractive to the populace,” he said.
