The 24 members-elect of the 8th Enugu State House of Assembly will be inaugurated Tuesday, June 13, 2023, says the Clerk of the House, Dr. Okey Udaya, in a statement released on Sunday.
The Clerk of the House, who is also Head of Legislative Service, said the inauguration will be held in the hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly Complex at Independence Layout by 10am.
Before now, speculations were rife that the Enugu State Government had conspired with the Clerk to secretly inaugurate the House with only the 10 People’s Democratic Party (PDP) members-elect present.
The idea behind the arrangement according to reports was to enable members elected on the PDP platform elect the principal officers of the House, especially the Speaker, as against the Labour Party (LP) that produced 14 members-elect during the last general elections.
But Dr. Udaya in an earlier interview with SummitNews, described the reports as false. Also, a high-heeled politician close to the Enugu State Government described the reports as unfounded, adding that “at no time in the history of Enugu State politics has the House of Assembly been covertly inaugurated.”
According to Dr. Udaya in his Sunday’s statement obtained by SummitNews, “Every member-elect is expected to bring the originals of his/her certificate of return from INEC and Code of Conduct Acknowledgement slip of Assets declaration to the Clerk of the House for sighting and verification.
“All members-elect are advised to be seated on their respective Constituency seats in the hallowed chamber of the House at 9.30am as punctuality is an invaluable decorum of the honourable House!” the statement concluded.
