The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI), has said members of the union would participate effectively in the ongoing nationwide strike declared by the organised labour.
Dr. Louis Omenyi, the branch ASUU chairperson, announced this in a press statement at the end of the emergency executive council meeting of the branch held in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital on Tuesday.
The statement was signed by Dr. Joseph Chukwu, its branch secretary and made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abakaliki.
According to him, the union has set up a seven-man branch monitoring committee to ensure total compliance of members to the ongoing strike which commenced Tuesday, Nov. 14 nationwide.
“As a result of the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the AEFUNAI ASUU branch has set up a Branch Strike Monitoring Committee (BSMC).
“The seven-man committee headed by a member of the executive council is to ensure total compliance to the national directive on the strike.
” The National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU approved ASUU’s participation in the strike because of the credibility of the present NLC leadership,” Omenyi said.
He reminded members that the strike was total, comprehensive and indefinite, adding that as long as the strike lasted there would be no teaching, faculty/departmental board meetings or any other statutory meeting involving ASUU AEFUNAI members.
The statement added that violators of this action would be sanctioned by the Constitution.
Our correspondent recalls that the NLC and its counterpart the TUC declared a nationwide strike effective midnight of November 13, following the federal government’s refusal to implement agreements entered into with labour for over time.
Banks and courts in Ebonyi also shut down operations in compliance with the directives of their national executive councils.
