The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the fatal shooting of Okezie Chikezie Mba, an Ogene musician widely known as Igbo Jah, by a police inspector who has since been arrested and detained.
According to a statement from the police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, Commissioner of Police CP Kanayo Uzuegbu has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State CID to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are taken against the officer involved.
The Commissioner expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the victim, labeling the incident as unacceptable and promising that the police officer and anyone else found responsible will face consequences.
The statement detailed that the shooting occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters. The musician was leaving after a friendly visit when, for reasons still under investigation, the police officer discharged his weapon, striking Mba. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. His body has been taken to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Commissioner Uzuegbu has called on those connected to the victim to remain calm and collaborate with the police to ensure justice is served.
