AN Igbo traditional wedding called “Igba Nkwu” is a vibrant, multi-stage family affair centered on the bride finding her groom to share palm wine.
It symbolises the union after initial family introductions (Iku Aka) and bride price payment (Ime Ego), filled with vibrant attire (like Isi Agu for groom, George wrappers/Ichafu for bride), music, dancing, feasting, and blessings from elders, marking a significant cultural celebration beyond the Western wedding.
In Anambra State, precisely Ossamalla Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area, Igwe Patrick Sule Ugboma, added colour to the ceremony of his son’s marriage during the yuletide when he formally introduced his son’s wife, Jamila Zuriya Uwani, from Niger State to Umuada as part of full integration into the women folk.
Igwe Ugboma also used the occasion to fete scores of women with food, drinks and cash.
Speaking to journalists, Igwe Ugboma explained that there are key stages of traditional marriage in Igboland which include Iku Aka (Knocking on the Door/Introduction), stressing that his son, Patrick Nduka had completed the marital ties.
The royal father said that today’s event has cultural significance as it is a community affair, emphasizing family unity and tradition over the bride.
The ceremony signifies the bride’s acceptance into the groom’s family and vice versa.
Little wonder, there were vibrant cultural elements, music, and food that made the event joyous and memorable.
The son of the traditional ruler, Patrick (jnr) was full of happiness over the successful outcoome of the ceremony, commending everyone who graced the occasion.
