The Executive Secretary, Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, says the organisation is committed to addressing the long-standing accommodation gap faced by police personnel across the country.
This is just as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, praised President Bola Tinubu, for embarking on comprehensive reforms in the Nigeria Police Force, especially in the critical areas of welfare and improved working conditions of police personnel across the country.
Alhaji Sheidu, expressed this commitment on Tuesday, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of an six-man rank-and-file quarters at the Ozalla Divisional police headquarters in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu state.
According to the NPTF boos, the housing gap has affected morale, efficiency, and overall well-being of police personnel across the country, adding that “we have taken it upon ourselves to begin finding practical, sustainable solutions” to the housing problem.
He thanked the Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah, for providing land for the project, saying, “the land given to us here is not just a parcel of land—it is a symbol of partnership, trust, and shared responsibility.
”It reflects the Governor’s commitment to security and to improving the welfare of those who protect our communities.”
He said that a well-housed police officer is a more motivated, focused, and effective police officer, adding that the project is not just about buildings; rather about dignity, stability, and creating an enabling environment for police officers and their families.
The IGP who was represented at the occasion by the Commissioner of Police, Enugu state Command, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, said “this landmark project is aimed at providing decent accommodation for police officers serving in Ozalla Division.”
According to him, “this infrastructural development by the NPTF, being one of its core mandates, will go a long way in enhancing the working environment of police officers in the Ozalla community and Enugu State at large.
“More importantly, it will si
gnificantly boost morale, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen the commitment of the benefiting officers to their constitutional duties.”
He assured that the NPF will provide all necessary support to the NPTF “to ensure that this project is completed within record time and deployed for its intended purpose.”
Speaking on behalf of the Command, Giwa requested the Trust Fund to extend this noble intervention to other police facilities across the State.
He said: “Of particular concern is the existing six-man rank-and-file quarters adjacent to this site, which is in a seriously dilapidated condition and requires urgent renovation.
“In addition, the Agbani Area Command, which oversees the Ozalla Division and six other Divisions, is presently housed in a structure grossly unbefitting of an Area Command Headquarters.
”There is, therefore, an urgent need for the construction of a purpose-built and befitting Headquarters for the Area Command. Several other divisional and area command offices and barracks across the State similarly require attention.
”Consequently, we sincerely request that the Trust Fund, in collaboration with the Officer-in-Charge of Works of the Enugu State Command, undertakes an on-the-spot assessment of these facilities to guide future remedial interventions.”
The event was attended by senior police officers, community leaders, traditional rulers, and Chairman Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Nwobodo.
