WHEN IBEKU PEOPLE CELEBRATED 2024 NEW YAM FESTIVAL

 

The people of Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State, on August 30, 2024, celebrated their annual New Yam Festival with pomp and pageantry.

Prince Benjamin B. Apugo(Ochiagha and Oparaukwu Ibeku) the custodian of Ibeku custom and tradition performed the traditional rites at Egwu Ibeku, the ancestral home of IBEKU, the founder of the ancient Ibeku Kingdom, to herald the commencement of the day’s event and eating of the new yam proper.

The event featured cultural dances on the streets of Umuahia, the state capital, by various groups especially the youths.

The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries including the Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti(OFR), represented by his deputy Engr Emetu Ikechukwu. and Hon Obinna Aguocha, representing Umuahia North/South and Ikwuano Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Prince Apugo, a successful farmer, businessman and politician, later entertained visitors at his palatial country home.
