Nigerian Military Warns Against Coup Calls, Denies Leadership Rumors – From Victor Chibuzo

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters issued a strong warning on Monday against calls for a military coup, labeling such actions as treasonous.

This warning was articulated in a statement from the Defence Headquarters, signed by Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information.

The military also denied claims that an acting Chief of Army Staff had been appointed and clarified that no such appointment exists within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). They emphasized that the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is on a well-deserved annual leave for 2024 and will return to duty shortly.

“DHQ clarifies that there has been no announcement regarding the appointment of any senior officer as acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), contrary to rumors reported by some media outlets. For the record, no such appointment exists within the AFN,” the statement said.

The DHQ urged those spreading baseless rumors to cease immediately, assuring that the COAS is in good health and will resume his duties after his leave.

Furthermore, it cautioned those promoting a military takeover, as evidenced by a viral video, that such actions are treasonous under the Constitution.

The AFN reiterated its commitment to upholding and advancing democracy, expressing loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The military remains focused on fulfilling its constitutional obligations to protect the nation’s integrity.

The relative peace currently experienced is attributed to the President’s support for the military and the dedication of the AFN leadership.

In this context, the AFN and relevant security agencies have been instructed to take necessary measures against any individuals or groups advocating for unconstitutional changes in the country. The Chief of Defence Staff expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and prayers, assuring them that victory is certain.
