Russia recruits ‘tens of thousands’ of mercenaries from Africa, Asia, says Kyiv

MOSCOW has enlisted at least “tens of thousands” citizens of African and Asian countries to fight alongside its armed forces, Ukraine’s National Resistance Center (NRC) reported on February 15.

According to the report, those who sign contracts are first trained on Russian territory, before being sent to fight in Ukraine. The Kremlin offers them salaries ranging between $2,000 and $4,000, although actual monthly allowances can be as low as “several hundred [U.S.] dollars,” NRC writes.

Russian intelligence agencies are actively recruiting individuals from Syria, Nepal, Afghanistan, India, Congo, Egypt, and Central Asian countries, using them as expendable manpower for assaults on Ukrainian positions.

CNN reported on February11 that Russia has recruited around 15,000 Nepalese citizens to fight against Ukraine. Many are drawn into the conflict by the Kremlin’s promise of high salaries for foreign mercenaries.
