EASE OF DOING BUSINESS: Abia Gov’t now issues Certificate of Occupancy within 30 days – From Victor Chibuzo/Umuahia

The Abia State Government says it has put the necessary machinery in place to ensure that those who.apply for the issuance of Certificate of Occupancy receive the titled document within 30 days of receipt of such application.

This innovation was disclosed in Umuahia, the state capital by the Hon Commissioner for Lands and Housing Chaka Chukwumerije, while giving an update on the activities of his ministry since the inception of Governor Alex Otti-led administration on May 29, 2023.

“What we met when we came in was that applications for issuance of Certificates of Occupancy were left unattended to for three, four, five and even seven years.

“It wasn’t a matter of routine that you apply for your Certificate of Occupancy, and you get it.

“….But today, the signing process of Certificate of Occupancy has been automated thus creating a more efficient system.

“So, our commitment to the adherence of issuance of Certificate of Occupancy within thirty days is sacrosanct, and in achieving this commitment, you don’t need a middle man to process your Certificate of Occupancy, Commissioner Chukwumerije assured.

However, he said that any delay in the issuance of the titled document could be as a result of the failure of the applicant to pay the requisite fees on time, presentation of faulty survey plan, and where there are issues regarding town planning records.

“This government has done a lot in terms of fidelity in ease of doing business, and ensuring that Certificates of Occupancy are issued within a 30-day circle,” he maintained.

The commissioner further said that the Governor Otti-led administration has invested much in the sprucing up of public buildings in the state.

According to him, “if you come to the state secretariat today, you will notice that we’re ‘a talk and do government’ – you’ll see the fencing of the secretariat, the cleanliness of the secretariat, the improvement of the structures to the revamping of the old abandoned Nnamdi Azikiwe secretariat.

“We had to evacuate the ASUBEB building which had structural issues, and we’re dealing with those issues….”
