The Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, a lawmaker from Abia State, for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver named Stephen Abuwatseya.
The incident arose when Abuwatseya attempted to deliver food to Ikwechegh. The driver reportedly requested Ikwechegh to come outside to receive his order, but the lawmaker refused and allegedly slapped him.
Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed that Ikwechegh is currently being interrogated at the Maitama Police Station. Abuwatseya lodged a complaint detailing that Ikwechegh not only slapped him but also challenged him to report the incident to the Inspector General of Police, indicating a disregard for authority.
In addition, rights activist Martin Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, has submitted a petition to the Inspector-General, demanding a thorough investigation and justice. In his letter, he accused Ikwechegh of threatening to make the driver “disappear” and called for his prosecution.
FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has promised a transparent investigation and assured that appropriate measures will be taken once the inquiry concludes.
