The newly elected chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Ebonyi , Mr Peter Nwele said that the task before him and his led State Working Committee was to rebuild the party and restore its glory.
Nwele stated this on Saturday in Abakaliki while addressing members of the party after being sworn in as the substantive chairman of the party at the end of state elective congress held at the party’s state secretary along Abakaliki – Enugu highway.
He said that the first major task berore him was to bring back all the agrieved members, reconcile them back to PDP and ensure that the party was restored back to glory.
He said that the new leadership would ensure that the PDP in Ebonyi was repositioned and made to play a vital role as a leading and most populous opposition party in the state.
Nwele, who emerged in a very peaceful, transparent and credible election commended members for the trust reposed in him promising to run an open-door administration.
“We owe a paramount duty to our great party. We are going to bring back the lost glory of our party; and in doing this, we are going to embark on a mission to bring back all the agrieved members who left the party due to one offence or the other.
“We all know that Ebonyi is a dominant PDP state and the story has not changed; we will embark reconciliation because the party is large enough to contain everyone,” Nwele said.
Earlier, Chief Ali Odefa, the national vice chairman of PDP, South-East zone told mewsmen in an interview that the mass turn out of delegates for the election showed the enthusiasm and interest that people still have for the PDP not only in Ebonyi but across the country.
He said that PDP was being reinvented not only to play a major opposition role but to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both states and national levels in the next general election.
“What we are doing is that we are putting our house in order, get our acts together to wrest power from the ruling party, APC.
” My advice to the new leadership of the party in the state is to go about building the party, helping to reconcile every interest because in partisan politics there is bound to be diverse interests, the ability to bring those interests together is what makes party stronger,” Odefa said.
Odefa hinted that the party would wecome all the members of the party who left the PDP fold for other parties wishing to contest on the party’s platform in 2027 general elections.
“An implosion awaits the other parties. This is People’s Democratic Party, we will open our arms and whoever wants to come in , we will welcome him back into the fold,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Ugonna Ogbonna, chairman of the PDP State Congress Committee (SCC) who announced the outcome of the election said that the election was conducted in line with laid down guidelines including accreditation of delegates.
He said that delegates and candidates for the various elective posts conducted themselves peacefully and orderly adding that the election was hitch free, credible and transparent.
“Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and various security outfits including; police, Civil Defence and the Department of State Security (DSS) were also on ground to monitor the exercise and provide security,” Ogbonna said. ENDS//
