UNN To Award 12, 499 First, Post Graduate Degrees, Diplomas At 53rd Convocation

THE University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), will honour 12, 499 graduates with first, higher degrees, diplomas and post graduate diplomas during its week long convocation ceremonies which began on Tuesday with a press briefing at the Enugu campus of the university.

Vice Chancellor of the university Prof. Polycarp Emeka Chigbu, who addressed journalists at the event, announced that 11, 143 persons will be conferred with first degrees, and degrees and diplomas.

According to him, 195 graduates will receive first class honours, while 4,165 graduates will be conferred with second class honours (upper division).

Also, 5,197 graduates will receive second class honours(lower division); third class honours will go to 659 graduates, while 16 will receive diplomas.

The number of those who passed was put at 22, while those whose degrees are unclassified are 889.

“The unclassified degrees are awarded to graduates of some courses such as medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine, which are not usually categorized into first, second and third classes,” explained the vice chancellor.

He further announced that a total of 1, 356 post graduate degrees and diplomas of the university will be awarded at the convocation ceremony.

The breakdown is as follows:-
431 persons will earn doctorate degree, while 848 persons will be awarded the masters degrees. A total of 77 post graduate diplomas of the university, will also be awarded at the occasion.

“Two persons have been found deserving of the honorary doctorate degrees of the university, and will be decorated accordingly.

“In keeping with our tradition, two deserving retired professors of the university will be elevated to the distinguished status of Emeritus Professor. These are Prof. Felix Ezema Onah (Faculty of the Social Sciences), and Prof. Isaac Uzoma Asuzu(Faculty of Veterinary Medicine),” the vice chancellor said.

The convocation activities include a lecture on Thursday, December 19, to be delivered by the President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe(SAN).

He will be speaking on the topic: “Harnessing Technological Teaching and Learning. The lecture which will hold at Princess Alexandra Hall, Nsukka campus, will be chaired by the Governor of Adamawa State, Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru.

The event will be followed at 5pm with prizes and awards night.

The award of first degrees and diplomas is scheduled for 10 am on Friday, December 20, at the Margaret Ekpo Convocation Arena, Nsukka campus, while the award of higher degrees, post graduate diplomas, and honorary doctorate degrees will hold on Saturday, December 21 by 10 am at the same venue.
