The Supreme Court has declared the local government elections held on October 5, 2024, by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) invalid.
Justice Jamilu Tukur delivered the judgment, stating that the election violated key provisions of the Electoral Act.
In his ruling, Justice Tukur emphasized that the actions of the RSIEC were rendered void due to substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act and its guidelines. He pointed out that the commission continued voter registration even after announcing the election date, which constituted a breach of the electoral process.
The court found that the procedures leading to the local government election were fundamentally flawed, violating Section 150 of the Electoral Act.
