THE National Agency for Food and Drug Administration And Control (NAFDAC), says it is ready to use technologies and modern means to mitigate the activities of counterfeiters of drugs and other products.
This was made known by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof, Mojisola Adeyeye, during a two-day sensitization and awareness workshop on Greenbook, traceability project, and Pediatric policy.
The intensive and insightful workshop was held on the 12th and 13th March, 2025 at Visa Karena Hotels, 3D Wonodi street, off Olu Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt Rivers State.
The workshop was designed in dimensional parts, basically the use of technology to aid the detection of SF medicinal products.
The sensitization and awareness workshop had pediatric medicinal products and regulations 2024, NAFDAC Greenbook 1 & 11, overview of traceable implementation in Nigeria, pharmaceutical products traceable regulations, 2024 and the overview of NAFDAC Scan2verify Android App as its subject topics that was robustly and insightfully highlighted and exposited.
Prof. Adeyeye who was represented at the event by the Director Post Market Surveillance, Pharmacist Fraden Bitrus, said “This workshop aims to provide information, sensitize stakeholders, and provide hands-on training on 3 things.
“The NAFDAC Greenbook, the traceability regulation 2024 and The Pediatric regulation 2024. This ensures that the regulator and the regulated are on the same page in combating SF medical products.
“Now, the counterfeiters have assumed more sophisticated dimensions to advance their trade. Therefore, the Agency is poised to use technologies and modern means to mitigate the activities of counterfeiters and therefore the need for sensitization of stakeholders is apt”
NAFDAC Director General further harped on the essence of the Greenbook 1& 1; according to her it’s to confirm the authenticity of a particular medicinal products while purchasing.
“The NAFDAC Greenbook is an online resource for identifying a product’s source. Enter the product name, brand name, or registration number to search for information about its registration status.
Verification of Authenticity: If the product is listed in the Greenbook, it signifies that it has been registered by NAFDAC and is considered authentic. Consumer Protection: The Greenbook serves as a tool to help consumers identify and avoid potentially fake or substandard products”
She solicited for the support of Nigerians to curb the menace of counterfeit medicinal products in Nigeria.
“I wish to call on all stakeholders in the healthcare space to support these laudable initiatives to combat SF and ensure that we provide quality, safe, and efficacious medical products to our people in Nigeria”.
There were good will messages from the Rivers state commissioner for health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, Director Pharmaceutical Services Rivers State, Pharmacist Charles Hallidey, Pharmaceutical manufacturer of Nigeria Rivers state, Pediatrics Association of Nigeria, Rivers state Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and Nigeria Medical Association, Rivers State branch.
Participants at the workshop were south-south zonal state directors of NAFDAC, Pharmacists, Doctors organized health-workers and stakeholder in medical health related matters.
