Former President Olusegun Obasanjo inaugurated the 46.3-kilometer Joe Irukwu Way on Friday, which runs through Umuahia North, Bende, and Ohafia Local Government Areas of Abia State. This road, previously named Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Ozuitem–Lohum–Nkpa–Umuimenyi–Isuikwuato–Alayi–Item–Igbere–Abiriba Road, was renamed by Governor Alex Otti to honor the late Joe Irukwu (SAN), a prominent Ohaneze Ndigbo leader and insurance expert from the region.
During the inauguration ceremony in Uzuakoli, Obasanjo praised the Abia Government for its dedication to infrastructure development amid economic hardships. Reflecting on his previous experiences traveling the road, Obasanjo remarked, “It was a hellish experience,” but noted that the newly constructed road reduced travel time from Umuahia to Abiriba to just 45 minutes, calling Governor Otti a “miracle worker.”
He emphasized the road’s potential to enhance the state’s socioeconomic development and urged leaders to prioritize vision, discipline, and the elimination of corruption. Obasanjo commended Otti’s leadership, stressing that good leaders are rare and deserve public support, regardless of political affiliation. He advised voters to “not change a winning horse” when election time arrives.
Governor Otti described the road project as a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure. He announced that the final phase of the road project, from Abiriba to Ohafia, is nearing completion with a reputable construction company. The governor highlighted that the rehabilitated road will improve travel time, enhance security, and lower transportation costs for residents.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South Senatorial District, expressed that the road would greatly benefit citizens, while other local leaders commended the government for alleviating local challenges and boosting agricultural productivity in the area.
Commissioner for Works, Otumchere Oti, detailed the project’s features, including comprehensive repairs and the installation of drainage systems and solar-powered street lights. He urged the local communities to take ownership of the infrastructure to prolong its lifespan.
