THE Progressive Students Movement (PSM) has urged Nigerians to Support the National Drug law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) rather than attack personnel of the agency.
The President of PSM, Amb. Bestman Okereafor, in a statement on Thursday in Enugu, saluted the gallant men of the NDLEA under the leadership of the Chairman of NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (retired).
Okereafor lauded Marwa for his visionary leadership built on innovations, dedication, resilience and steadfastness in tackling drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
“The leadership of the foremost Progressive Students Movement (PSM) Nigeria Chapter, joins the world, and importantly Nigeria in celebrating 2025 United Nations (UN) Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
“In commemoration of the 2025 UN Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking, we are calling on the general public to support the agency rather than attack its personnel.
“We strongly believe that more sensitisations and continuous public awareness will further reduce the menace of drug abuse in our society,” he said.
Okereafor called on parents, students, youths and general public to “say no to drug abuse and trafficking” because it had done more harm than good.
He said that the negative effect of drug use included: nausea and abdominal pain, which can also lead to changes in appetite and weight loss.
“Drug use can increase strain on the liver, which puts the person at risk of significant liver damage or liver failure.
“Other negative effects are seizures, stroke, mental confusion, brain damage, and Lung disease among others,” he said.
The PSM boss commended the Ogun State Command of NDLEA under the leadership of Commander Tijani Rabe for considering an inter-agency football competition to celebrate the day.
He said that inter-agency football competition would further foster an harmonious working synergy with other security agencies in accordance with international best practices.u
