IGBO LANGUAGE EXTINCT: Transfer Igbo Culture, Tradition To Our Children, Says Chief Okpara – From Chukwudi Ejimofor/Port Harcourt

To rejuvenate the rich culture and traditions of Ndị-Igbo world-wide and dislodge the UNESCO prediction that Ịgbo language will go into extinct, there should be transfer of Ịgbo culture and tradition to the young people of Ndị-Igbo.

Chief Pat Okpala, Egbe Vuru Ọkụ 1 N’Achịna (Obisambara) gave the admonitions in a chat with newsmen at the 2025 end of the year party of Nze Na-Ọzọ Ọnụọgụnatọ Achina, at Ụmụezeịyị Village Hall, Achina Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. He said “What we are doing now is to transfer that culture to our children. We need to start teaching our children with our language, because language is culture”.

“You will be surprised to know that in the United States of America, we perform Ịgbo culture and tradition in a very serious way. We have schools where Igbo language is thought. There is no week in USA when you will not see a section of Ịgbo people that didn’t gather performing Ịgbo cultural festival in a more serious manner in Ịgbo regalia attires, Igbo masquerade and Igbo diet, and we are so proud of it that the white guy joins us. We are good ambassador of our culture and we want it to continue in that way.

Chief Egbe Vuru Ọkụ N’Achịna, a renowned academician, who resides in Atlanta USA, has spend greater part of his life abroad has the penchant for Ịgbo traditional institution said “I am always overwhelmed anything Nze N’Ozo traditional institution is mentioned. I started Achina Development Association in New York, I am a member of Ịgbo unions, Anambra and the church unions in USA. When the Ịgbo traditional Nze Nâ-Ọzọ title holders come out with their regalia, I was left behind, I wasn’t eligible, because I hasn’t been admitted into the club of Nze Nâ-Ọzọ Ịgbo title club then. I returned home and meet my uncle, that was in 1989, and informed him that I want to be initiated into the the club. My uncle rallied round, and I meet-up the demands and obligations, the rituals were performed, I was admitted into the Nze Nâ-Ọzọ club that year.”

So since then, I had this huge interest in the fraternity of Nze Nâ-Ọzọ titles. As result of this I am one of the spokesperson where I was at New York, and now I resides at Atlanta in United States of America; any Ịgbo traditional event, I am always invited. Anything about the Ịgbo tradition and culture interests me most”

On what informed hosting the 2025 end of the year Egbe Vuru Oku Achina posited “When returned last year 2024, I was part of the Nze Na-Ọzọ Ọnụọgunatọ end of the year activities. At the end of the event, I pleaded to house that I want to host them for the 2025 end of the year and that is what we are celebrating today. I had grand preparations for today’s end of the year event. When I came in this arena I looked round and a thought came to me that most of us here are fathers and grandfathers, we are near aged people, I feel if such things are done in abroad, we should bring it home for us. If Nze Nâ-Ọzọ title hold gathers in this form, there should be something we are doing for ourselves. So, I am highly elated”.

On what significantly interests him in the Nze Nâ-Ọzọ title Traditional institution? Chief Obisambara said “When one is accepted into the Ozo society; it’s a society of the upright men. Those men that are upright, honest, those men that respects the customs and traditions of the land, they don’t commit evil of any sort, both in the open and in the secret”.

“Luckily enough I invited a few of my friends here and one of promised he is going to sponsor next year 2026 end of year event. And today I am so happy a man”.

Again, for the Nze Na-Ọzọ title, I thank HRH Igwe Godwin N. Obiora, Ezeịdegwu 111, and his cabinet who has put up fresh ideas to revive the Nze Na-Ọzọ title in Achina for it to gain its prestige, because there are some areas we need to tinka, after that Achina Nze Na-Ọzọ will be more formidable. Egbevuruọkụ stressed

In a chat with newsmen also Nze Emmanuel Akunne (Ezenwnọrue), chairman Nze Nâ-Ọzọ Ọnụọgụnatọ Achina his take about 2025 end of the Get-Together, he said “we thank God who has positioned Chief Egbe Vuru Oku for us. He is our good ambassador that is covers up and down for us. He requested that Nze Nâ-Ọzọ title holders should get together and fraternize. He is the sky rocketed morals for Nze Na-Ọzọ Achina. We are thinking God and also thanking him.

Nze Ezenwnoruo while expressing joy and gratitude for the event of the day, advised well meaning, and well positioned individual to emulate the think home attitude of Obisambara.

“I advise his contemporaries that abandoned our culture and tradition to emulate him; charity begins at home. In Obisambara’s company today, someone has promised to sponsor the year 2026 event. We are happy and optimistic that as things goes on everything will be good, and we say to Obisambara thank you in ernest”. Ezenwnọrue asserted

The event featured large turnout of members in their pensive mood attires. Verities to eat and drink, entertainments galore and survivers were shared to every member of the club presence.
