The political landscape in Abia State witnessed a major shift on Monday, May 4, 2026, as high-profile members of the African Democratic Congress defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress during the NDC State Congress held at BANPAC Hotel, Umuahia with full coverage by media giants Arise Tv, News Central and many others.
The Congress, which commenced at 3:00 p.m., was attended by two officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission. Proceedings began with the National Anthem and the introduction of the Congress Committee members.
A wave of defections by political heavyweights, ward and local government executives, and grassroots members preceded the main business of the Congress. Defectors cited the need for a more progressive, people-driven platform as the primary reason for aligning with the NDC.

Political observers described the mass defection as both strategic and symbolic, signaling a deepening shift in loyalty toward the NDC under the leadership of Chief Ako Atulomah.
During the Congress, party stakeholder Apostle Ekeleme moved a motion for consensus adoption of the State Executive Committee. The motion was seconded by Dr. Peter Friday and unanimously adopted by state delegates.
The newly elected State Executive Committee was sworn in by Barr. Godson Godsent, who administered the party’s Oath of Office.

In his acceptance speech, the duly elected State Chairman, Chief Ako Atulomah reassured members of his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and people-oriented service.
Votes of thanks was delivered by Ugoeze Dr. Nkechinyere Kalu, State Woman Leader, on behalf of women, and Comr. Chibueze Apugo State Youth Leader, on behalf of youths.
