Rescue operators have so far recovered two dead bodies of students trapped in the hostel building that collapsed at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra state.
Oko, a mini-commercial municipality, is the home town of late former Vice President Dr. Alex Ekwueme.
The town has a long history of gully erosion, and many residents had over the years lost their homes to the environmental blight.
The multi-storey building collapsed on Sunday night, July 27, 2026, while students were reportedly inside.
Several people living nearby said they heard a loud noise before the building collapsed.
The sound attracted many residents and students, who rushed to the scene.
