Court Halts Impeachment Move Against Gov. Fubara, Deputy

THE Rivers state House of Assembly on Friday passed a resolution to send a letter to the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Chibuzo Amadi, requesting him to set up a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the state Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy Prof. Ngozi Oduh, in accordance with section 188(sub-section 5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

This move comes after 25 members of the 27-member house voted in favour of the investigation of the allegations leveled against the governor and his deputy.

However, a Rivers state High Court sitting in Oyigbo, Rivers state, has restrained the lawmakers from proceeding with the impeachment process.

The court also restrained the state Chief Judge from receiving any document relating to the setting up of a 7-member panel to investigate the allegations leveled against the governor and his deputy, until the final determination of the suit filed by the governor and his deputy.

The matter was adjourned until January 23.
