Good governance must be responsive, transparent, forward looking, Says Jim Nwobodo – From Chukwudi Ejimofor/ Port Harcourt

Chief Nwobodo:

Former governor of old Anambra state Chief   Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo, says good governance must be responsive, transparent and forward looking to qualify as people oriented government.

Nwobodo made the statement while delivering his speech as the Chairman at the 15th Emeka Ayoku Annual Lecture Series hosted by Imo state governor, Senator Hope Odidika Uzodimma in Owerri, Imo State capital, with Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha the vice chancellor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Anambra state as the keynote speaker.

He described the Annual Lecture Series as a mirror of national journey and not an intellectual exercise, noted that Nigeria is not just a nation, but a global community.

The ex-governor said that governance must be seen as a shared responsibility among the people, courts, markets, the civil society and not only that of those in corridor of powers. He identified indices of good governance to include, accountability, institutional strength, as against individual and moral

He queried the reason why the aforementioned indices cannot work in Nigeria, when they have worked in other climes.

“Our problems of economic volatility, insecurity, youth unemployment, among others are not insurmountable, but test of the leadership.

“They therefore deserve a new kind of leadership that is responsive, transparent and forward -looking, “Nwobodo said.

Chief Nwobodo urged the youths, civil society organizations and the media to be vigilant to strengthen democracy.

“Ideas, are only powerful, when they are translated into action and commitment. So let this event not end as a talkshop, but with commitment to good governance,” Senator Nwobodo posited.

The Distinguished Chief Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on good governance is an annual event with this year’s theme: Imperative Of Good Governance In Nigeria.
