JUNE 2025 was a month of significant developments and notable leadership milestones in Enugu State.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah had some compelling engagements in the month of June.
These routines aptly testify to his visionary leadership. From statesmanship on the national stage to far-reaching reforms in security, education, and economic diversification, every step the governor had taken in June was consistent with his “Tomorrow is Here” promise.
The month opened on a note of grace and shared spiritual values as Governor Mbah hosted Pastor Lazarus Muoka, the General Overseer of The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries. Their meeting was one of warmth and reflection, highlighting a shared concern for the moral, spiritual, and developmental direction of society.
In the same week, Governor Mbah welcomed Prince Orji Ugochukwu, the immigration officer, whose patriotic courage led to the arrest of the prime suspect in the tragic Ezeagu incident.
Describing him as “a man who chose duty over personal gain,” the Governor lauded Ugochukwu’s unwavering integrity, casting him as a national role model and a testament to the kind of society Enugu State seeks to nurture: one where courage and service are honoured.
A major highlight of June was the high-profile visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, accompanied by the wife of the Vice President and First Ladies from eight states. At the Enugu International Conference Centre, thousands of health workers received medical kits as part of the Renewed Hope Initiative — an intervention symbolising the restoration of dignity in maternal healthcare.
Beyond scrubs and Crocs, the initiative delivered a ₦50 million grant to empower 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu State. Governor Mbah seized the moment to spotlight his administration’s aggressive revamp of healthcare training, including the elevation of the state’s School of Nursing into a full-fledged College with four campuses and the capacity to graduate 3,000 nurses annually.
It was a week that demonstrated that Enugu is not merely part of the federal picture — it has become a beacon of it. Enugu is now playing a strong role at the centre of governance in Nigeria.
On the same visit, the First Lady commissioned the Technical and Vocational Education and Training College (GTC), Enugu — the first of eight such institutions across the state. This transformation from a decaying structure into a modern innovation hub was a striking metaphor for Mbah’s educational philosophy: learning must be skill-based, future-proof, and development-driven.
The GTC Enugu boasts 24 ultra-modern centres across diverse fields — from renewable energy to digital innovation. With hostels accommodating up to 1,000 students, the institution also houses two Smart Green Schools, reflecting Mbah’s integrated approach to educational transformation. In his words, “No nation rises above the quality of its people. This is why we are investing in human capital.”
Security was another cornerstone of June’s engagements. Governor Mbah hosted AIG Abayomi Oladipo, head of Zone 13, at the Lion Building, where he reaffirmed Enugu’s position as the safest state in Nigeria.
From AI-powered surveillance and a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre to over 150 operational vehicles under the Distress Response Squad, the security infrastructure in Enugu tells a story of strategic foresight. Mbah dismissed social media propaganda, assuring that while “fake narratives” circulate, facts on the ground speak louder: Enugu is secure, resilient, and ever-ready.
Mbah’s governance has always placed the vulnerable at the centre. This commitment was on full display with the inauguration of the Management Board for the Protection of State-Owned Social Homes, chaired by the First Lady, Nkechinyere Mbah. With a board comprising distinguished clergy, technocrats, and advocates, the Governor emphasised that inclusive prosperity must reach the most vulnerable citizens, not as an afterthought but as a priority.
In a rare but profound act of justice tempered with mercy, Governor Mbah granted clemency to eleven inmates. This exercise of constitutional prerogative followed the counsel of a broad-based Advisory Committee and underscored the administration’s commitment to humane justice, reintegration, and second chances.
One of the month’s most heartwarming moments came when Maduka Okoye — Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Udinese FC goalkeeper — visited the Lion Building. Governor Mbah appointed him as Enugu State Youth Ambassador and pledged land support for his planned football academy in Enugu.
“Maduka represents the future of Enugu — bold, global, and committed to giving back,” Mbah said, also inviting the star to headline the next Enugu International Marathon. In Okoye’s story, the Governor found both symbol and substance for his youth-first vision.
Governor Mbah’s June activities also extended into economic policy. When the Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, led by Senator Ekong Sampson, visited, Mbah highlighted Enugu’s mineral potential, including coal, limestone, iron ore, and silica — resources that must no longer lie dormant.
He called for constitutional clarity, federal-state synergy, and accurate geospatial data to unlock the sector’s vast potential. The Governor’s stance was firm: Enugu will no longer stand by as illegal miners exploit its resources — it is time for lawful, productive development.
In a demonstration of international credibility, Enugu’s education reform gained global endorsement through a prestigious Spencer Foundation Vision Grant. With education leaders from the University at Buffalo in attendance, the grant aims to scale experiential learning across Enugu’s 260 Smart Green Schools.
“This grant is not just funding; it is validation. We are building an education ecosystem where learning aligns with innovation, skills, and real-world application,” Mbah noted. He emphasised system-wide transformation, from basic to tertiary education.
Governor Mbah was the keynote host at the 2025 Biennial Convention of the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Enugu, where he delivered a seminal speech calling for renewed trust between the government and the media.
“We are co-authors of Nigeria’s future,” he declared, urging the media to balance fearless inquiry with constructive engagement. Highlighting Enugu’s open-data governance and grassroots inclusion — such as delivering 260 schools, farm estates, and health centres across all wards — Mbah called on journalists to see intelligent critique not as hostility, but as public service.
June closed on a politically poignant note as Governor Mbah received PDP stalwarts, including Governor Seyi Makinde, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and Senator Ben Obi. The gathering addressed internal challenges within the PDP, particularly the unresolved matter of the National Secretaryship.
Mbah reiterated that the Southeast reserves the right to reevaluate its standing in the party if justice and internal democracy continue to be undermined. “The position of the Southeast as issued in the communiqué is sacrosanct,” he stated pointedly, cementing his role as a principled voice for equity and representation.
